The studios behind these projects - City State Entertainment and ArtCraft Entertainment, respectively - are disposing of many tried and tested traditions, carving their own path in the hopes of finding new and fertile ground. The two most notable examples are Camelot Unchained and Crowfall. There is light at the end of the tunnel, however, and it's in games that focus on one aspect of the genre, aiming to innovate or perfect it rather than being a jack of all trades. Swathes of publishers and developers who might once have been interested in creating or releasing an MMO have placed a red cross on the genre’s door as a no-go zone. The end result, in many cases, saw bloated products with little focus and with implementation of ideas and mechanics too poor to justify the price tag or subscription fee. While some of the blame inevitably falls at the feet of publishers pushing products out the door too early (notably WildStar and Warhammer Online), most simply promised too much and delivered too little. With a lengthy list of massively multiplayer casualties over the last few years, including Warhammer Online, City of Heroes, World of Darkness and EverQuest Next, it’s fair to say the genre is in need of an intervention.īetween actual MMO failures and the lackluster success of some survivors, there’s a frightening level of consistency that connects them all. Even the resilient World of Warcraft, despite buoyant Legion sales, still isn’t willing to divulge subscription numbers a sign that things aren't eternally rosey. WildStar is barely scraping an income, Black Desert Online saw a strong start but petered out not long after launch and Guild Wars 2 continues to see a decline in revenues. While there’s still plenty of money to be made, the current crop are having a rough time. Requiring a healer to try and manage something like this in 500v500 battles makes me think the devs were doing copious amounts of LSD.Massively multiplayer games are in a poor state. Not sure why there is healer hate lately in MMORPGS but again this system was so stupid. Good god can you imagine trying to balance a system like that. No one asked for complicated skills where you can add modifiers and aim at body parts. So many people on the Alpha forums basically feel the same way. The health and skill systems are fucking dumb. But on the other hand it would be cool to get player crafted castles and mega cities. If i have to do that in game to participate in the game im going to die inside. The builder system gives me mixed feelings. I understand gamers arent kids anymore with a ton of time to dump into a game, and the feeling of being outclassed by someone else that had time to grind levels, weapons and armor probably does not feel so good in a PvP environment but vertical progression and meaningful character building is a HUGE reason why i like to play these types of games. Idk what the hell MMORPGs are doing lately but CU wanting to limit or outright remove vertical progression kills my soul. This looks like a slight improvement on EQ1 graphics right now. Can bases/towns even survive for more than a few seconds when that many siege engines and players are trying to lay waste? To date, the graphics and animations are absolutely trash. What an absolute cluster fuck those fights are going to be. But then I think about it from the practical standpoint. Is 500v500 even going to be fun? The more i think about it the less i am inclined to think it will be. Thats the point! Strive for an experience that no one has even imagined. I get that CU is striving for something different. ![]() I cant think of one instance in gaming where something even close to that has occurred. But the more I think about it, the less I think they needed to create an engine. Creating an engine from the ground up is very difficult. I dont really care if the project takes 15+ years to be realized.if its a good game I am happy to wait, but I am not seeing improvement between iterations. There is a lot of stuff I am seeing that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. But with that said I am thinking hard about it. ![]() I dont think I will request a refund as I dont really need the money and want this project to succeed. I supported because my favorite MMOs were DAOC and Warhammer (i fucking loved Warhammer actually). I am a Warrior 2.0 Forever backer as well.
